EPI-NO is a save product. Since 65.000 units had been in use worldwide and used properly no harm neither to a pregnant woman nor to a baby ever happened. During all past and current studies neither ethic comittees nor scientific investigators had or have concerns to test the EPI-NO with pregnant women in order to examine the benefits of the training.



In September 2006 an 'Adverse Event Report' was published at the MAUDE database describing a possible coherency between a training with EPI-NO and an assumpted veneous air embolism - those reports in general are published without any assessments or further examination. Later on an article has been published at the 'Green Journal' ( by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) - describing exactly that case.



The facts:



A woman (or better: her husband) used a defective device with obviously a hole in the balloon. While she was reclined on the couch her husband handled the handpump. He found out, that the balloon continuously was loosing air, and he started - in spite of that - to pump her up continuously for up to 5 - 10 minutes (!) (we tested that - must have been 30 - 60 liters or 7 to 14 gallons of air - if that is possible at all). Of course this lady got problems and they called the emergency. She's got her baby in the hospital and in the end nothing happened to her or the baby.



The 'Green Journals' article describes that case (here the pumping up was noted with 10-20 minutes !) and resulted in a possible or 'likely' veneous air embolism as a consecution of what happened.



In General:



In scientific literatur some very rare events are found describing an veneous air embolism during pregnancy - some as a result of abuse of devices, some after sexual intercourse and one f.i. after masturbationg with a carrot. That means: You actually can't 100% medically exclude the possibility, that with an abuse of such a medical device sort of embolism might be a result. We all know, that pumping up a woman for some 10 minutes is beyound any common sense and all that was done clearly against the instructions for use.



The result of the Green Journals article was not a recommendation, not to use the device, but: " Our recommendation is that midwives and obstetricians who recommend the use of these types of devices or who agree to their use specifically instruct patients to test the device for leaks before each use".


The Instructions for Use of the EPI-NO devices clearly state:

"Inflate the balloon before each application to approx. 7 cm diameter (3 inches - s. fig. operating instruction) and examine it for any imperfections and possible punctures.

Never use a defective device. ... "


This note in addition is made with the red sheet (Imortant Notes) packed with each product.


We declare, that properly used, and used according to the Instrutions for Use the use of EPI-NO is save and excludes a possibilty of air embolism caused by a training with the device.
This is lightened up as well with a follow up article by Judy Slome Cohain reg. that case published in the very same Green Journal (attached).

Even with the smallest hole in it - we tested that - it's nearly impossible to inflate the balloon to a larger shape, let alone pump liters of air into a woman. Several times asked (by mail) FDA and we asked the Green Journals author to pass on that device to us for examination - we never even got an answer.

בספרות המדעית מקרים מאד נדירים נמצאו שתיארו קשר בין תסחיף במהלך ההריון, חלק לאחר שימוש לרעה במכשיר, כמה לאחר משגל, ואחד לאחר אוננות עם גזר. זה אומר שלא ניתן במאה אחוז להוציא מכלל אפשרות שבניצול לרעה של מכשיר רפואי, תסחיף ייתרחש. כולנו יודים שניפות אשה במשך 10 דקות הוא מעבר לכל הגיון ובוצע במפורש בניגוד להוראות השימוש.

התוצאה בפרסום בעיתון הירוק היתה לא להמליץ כנגד השימוש במכשיר, אלא שמיילדות ורופאים הממליצים על שימוש במכשירים מסוג זה, ידריכו את הפציינטים לבדוק את המכשיר לדלף לפני כל שימוש.

הוראות השימוש של האפי-נו אומרות בבירור:
נפחי את הבלון לפני כל שימוש לבערך קוטר של 7 ס"מ, ובחני אותו לכל חוסר שלמות ונקר אפשרי... לעולם אל תשתמשי במכשיר פגום." ההוראה הזו מוגדשת בבוראות.

אנו מצהירים כי שימוש נכון ובהתאם להוראות השימוש של האפי-נו הוא בטוח, ושולל אפשרות לגרימת תסחיף עקב האימון באמצעות המכשיר.

אפילו עם החור הקטן ביותר, ובדקנו זאת, זה כמבט בלתי אפשרי לנפי את הבלון לגודל גדול יותר, שלא לדבר על לנפח ליטרים של אויר לתוך אשה. מספר פעמים נשאר באמצעות המייל FDA ואנחנו מהעיתון הירוק להעביר את המכשיר אלינו לבדיקה, מעולם אפילו לא קיבלנו תשובה.
