Not a problem at all. The midwife usually does a home visit within one week of the birth and does the blood test on the baby with a special card from the laboratory and then either she or you sends it by mail registered, to Tel Hashomer where the national screening lab is. You don't need yet a identity number . They send you an answer or call you if there is a problem. THey check for phenlyketunuria and hypothyroidism. If you live too far for the midwife, then you can return to her, or sometimes you can have it done in Tipat CHalav. It can be done anytime from 36 hours after birth within 2 weeks, best within one week. Ilana Shemesh
